Thykar of Sanctuary returns home from his travels to discover his home ravaged by marauders. His mother is fatally injured. Her last words to him are, “Honor me, my son as I have tried to honor you.”
Overwhelmed by grief, Thykar turns to the Lurian Hills in search of comfort and answers. The ancient writings tell of The Crown of Culdara, an artifact with great power, but what kind? Good or evil? In the course of his search for the elusive Crown, he encounters many new and strange creatures. One is a tribe known as the Sicars who tell him their history. After many weeks, he reaches the cave dwellings of the Trobieh where his final question is answered.
At the same time, the adventures of Dogan MacRae, a human and Kereth, the golden Tyran continue as they accompany Nighthawk to a community of telepaths known as the Silver Eye.

When Dogan is attacked by a cliff panther, he manages to kill the animal with his last bit of strength then collapses beside Kereth in the cave. The refugees are rescued by Nighthawk and her small companion, Thykar. Nighthawk takes them to Sanctuary, where the adventures of Dogan and Kereth continue as they build new lives on Culdara.
